Partial Shutdown this weekend: The Berea Makerspac Partial Shutdown this weekend: The Berea Makerspace will be draining the water from the co2 laser and inductive heater today. We aren't stopping members from coming in, but we don't want expensive equipment to break if the power goes out. They'll be back in service when Jess comes in on Wednesday.
What a year! We decided to make an end of year rev What a year! We decided to make an end of year review for our open house in December, and we'd love to share it with everyone who couldn't make it! Highlights for 2025 include: Our fourth year of traditional craft Our second year of Juno's homeschool program Building a 20' catfish for the Interdependence Day festival Our first year of building Kentucky School for the Deaf's Tech Space The EKY Rebuilds and CAReNet projects through SPARK What we're working on for this year: Collaborating more with local artists, organizations, and the community Setting up more workshops outside of our traditional craft programming Finding ourselves a new space to grow into, to further increase our accessibility and our ability to work with local artists and organizations further. That last one is a pretty big project, so if you want to help, please reach out to us. We're still exploring how we fund this, and how we execute it. It's a big undertaking and we need more help than ever to make it happen.
Reminder: our holiday open house is this Thursday, Reminder: our holiday open house is this Thursday, 6-9pm. This replaces our regular open house and new member orientation with one slightly more festive and engaging =) Members Laura and Kiana are going to be helping folk make christmas cards with our etching press and other printmaking tools (Laura's showing off her 3d printed one as well), Caleb is going to be making patches, Dan is going to be running a game of Hextraction, Phil will be cutting ornaments out of steel, Bill and Jess will be manning the lasers, and Bob Montgomery will be making an appearance to do a hammer demo! We'll have refreshments, cold and hot, stickers, and other free tokens made in a makerspace to hand out as well!
Our Holiday Open House is imminent! We're hosting Our Holiday Open House is imminent! We're hosting it again on Thursday evening, December 18th, 6-9pm. Come by for refreshments, member demos, and discussion about the Berea Makerspace and it's path forward as a community hub. From 6:30-7:30, we'll be highlighting our achievements of 2025 (and previous years if I don't think I filled the page up enough), and inviting other orgs to come chat about mutual aid and community involvement in Berea and central / eastern Kentucky. If your group has been around for a while or just starting up, we'd love to talk with you about future collaborations. The Berea Makerspace thrives on community outreach and helping others. Registration is open for December Beginner Blacksm Registration is open for December Beginner Blacksmithing with Bob Montgomery, and we still have space in Beginner Welding with Doug Clarke. Register on our website at bereamakerspace.org/calendar, or through the ticket links on our facebook event. "Do you get excited by blacksmithing in your favorite games or shows, and want to explore how it really works? Come spend an afternoon with Bob Montgomery, a local artist and blacksmith, as you learn the basics of the craft. In this three hour session, get hands-on with Bob and begin working out your first projects on the anvil. Projects may change every month, but the focus is on the process and building your experience. Repetition is key. Minimum age of 13. Must wear appropriate clothing for being around fire - closed toe shoes, hair pulled back. We have eyes and ear protection available if you'd like."
